Our aim is to empower the learners with the knowledge, values, skills and personal qualities to be confident and keen to take part in sport and physical activities, throughout their time at school and beyond in later life.
- To develop students’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school.
- To provide a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all students to succeed and excel (to infinity and beyond) in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.
- To provide opportunities for students to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.
- To build character such as determination and resilience, and help embed values such as fairness, respect and teamwork.
Our very dedicated PE staff run numerous teams so students can experience the challenge and enjoyment that can be gained from competitive sport. We also encourage students to become Sports Leaders to experience and develop leadership skills.
We believe that everyone can benefit from physical activity, regardless of ability, to promote their health and fitness. Where physical disability is a concern, we will adapt and personalise a PE programme to suit the needs of the student. We believe there are no barriers to participation.
Key Stage 4 (GCSE PE Edexcel)
If students choose to study GCSE PE in Key Stage 4, they will have five GCSE PE lessons per fortnight.
The course is made up of the following:
30% is practical activity (one individual activity, one team activity and one other). Students will learn and develop new skills and techniques through a range of activities. Three sports are selected for practical assessment.
10% of the course involves specialising in one activity (eg netball) and completing a Personal Exercise Program for the chosen sport.
60% of the course takes place in the classroom studying the theoretical knowledge required to excel in sport.
There are two written exam papers, each has a selection of multiple choice questions, short answer questions and two longer answer questions; the practical assessment is based on three sports and there is also the personal exercise programme. There will also be a practical moderation day.

Key Stage 4 Core PE
In Year 10 and 11, students receive two PE lessons per fortnight. Progress, attendance and organisation are monitored. The subject content will meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, and enable the students to experience Athletics and Cross-Country, Competitive Games (badminton, basketball, cricket, dodgeball, football, handball, netball, rounders, rugby, softball, tennis, volleyball, hockey), Dance, Gymnastics and Health Related Fitness. In Year 11, students will have some input into the planning of the sports covered, giving them greater flexibility in the activities followed.
Key Stage 3
Students generally have PE in mixed gender classes, although on some occasions, if we have two PE classes from the same year group on PE together, we may teach the students in separate boys and girls classes. In Year 7, 8 and 9, students will receive four PE lessons per fortnight. Assessments are made following the completion of a Unit of Work in a particular sport. Progress, attendance and organisation are monitored. The subject content will meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, and enable the students to experience Athletics and Cross-Country, Competitive Games (badminton, basketball, cricket, dodgeball, football, handball, netball, rounders, rugby, softball, tennis, volleyball, hockey), Dance, Gymnastics and Health Related Fitness.
We regularly enter inter-school competitions in a variety of sports and achieve a good amount of success.
Lunchtime and after-school clubs are run in a variety of activities supporting students who wish to progress further.
The students benefit from learning in superb facilities which include excellent playing fields (four football pitches, one rugby pitch, two grided areas, two all-weather cricket wickets, three bay cricket nets and a 400m athletics track). We also have a tarmac sports area for tennis (five full courts plus four short tennis courts), netball (five courts), hockey and football (7-a-side).
Our indoor facilities include our main sports hall, consisting of four badminton courts, one netball court, one basketball court, one volleyball court and an indoor football 5-a-side pitch. We have our modern fitness suite with a wide range of fitness equipment. We also have a gymnasium and community room where we can teach other indoor sports.
